Buttermilk Ranch Dressing recipe with mayo, sour cream, and fresh buttermilk for a serious homemade taste.
Because this recipe only takes mere minutes to make, you can easily whip up homemade dressing every time you make a salad! Bottom line- making dressing is totally worth the minimal effort to really make your meal with love.
There are a lot of pre-packaged food items that I don’t mind buying but dressing is not one of them. I feel like ranch needs to be homemade every time – the great news is that its so much easier than you think to make your own ranch dressing.
Personally, ranch from home just elevates your salad to the next level and its one of the reasons I can get my kids to even swallow lettuce.
This is my very favorite Ranch dressing recipe and I hope you give it a shot. There are some substitutions/variations below for some of the ingredients, so do not get too discouraged if you have to change it up.

Common Ranch Dressing Recipe Questions
- Can I use yogurt instead of sour cream? Yes, you can use unflavored Greek Yogurt in place of sour cream.
- Can you use Hidden Valley Seasoning? You could use a hidden valley dry dressing combined with your mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk for a similar taste, but you would miss the true homemade of using seasonings.
- No Buttermilk? No problem. Not everyone keeps buttermilk unless they are going to making a specific recipe. And while its worth grabbing a carton for dressings, you don’t have to be bummed if you don’t have any. Simply substitute the buttermilk for other things like whole whipping cream, half and half or milk. Just start with a little at a time till you get the consistency you want.
- Is Ranch low carb or Keto? Buttermilk is *technically* not common in most Keto diets- although it is dairy, its high in carbs and sugar so if you are on a strict low carb diet, this is not a great recipe as is. That being said, the buttermilk is meant to thin the recipe so you can substitute with whole whipping cream to keep this one low carb. As a side note, buttermilk is about 12 carbs per cup, so if you are only having a bit of dressing, it might not be that big of a deal.
Making Homemade Ranch Dressing
Mix mayonnaise and sour cream together.
Add all measured out spices, herbs and Worcestershire sauce and mix well.
If you were making a ranch dip, this is where you would stop.
For dressing, however, now add buttermilk, a little at a time, until you have the desired consistency for dressing.
Now you can eat this dressing right away but it tastes better if you cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes (or overnight) for flavors to mingle.
Shake or stir before serving.
Store leftover dressing covered and in the refrigerator.
Makes 1 cup dressing (depending on how thin or thick you like dressing)
