Rich, savory perfection—this chocolate lava cake in microwave, homemade cake in 1 minute with cocoa powder, flour, and sugar, is the perfect base for a melty, gooey chocolate center. This viral TikTok mug cake recipe is broken down step by step for a home-cooked microwave dessert in minutes.
BOIL WATER - This recipe needs 2 tablespoons of boiling or very hot water to start. Simple add some water into a microwave safe glass, place in microwave and heat for about 3 minutes until boiling. Very carefully remove glass and set aside for the rest of the recipe.
Combine your soft room temperature or pre-melted butter, white sugar and boiling water. Stir well so ingredients combine and sugar dissolves.
Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1/4th cup self rising flour.
Stir the mixture until a cocoa batter forms, about 1 minute. Make sure you scrape the ides of the mug so there isn't excess powder.
Break off 2-4 mini bars of chocolate for the center of your cake. Traditionally, in a molten lava cake, this is dark chocolate. You can also buy semi-sweet, white chocolate and regular milk chocolate. Place in mug and stir so the batter covers the chocolate.

Keep in mind that how your mug cake cooks will depend on a few things - the size of your mug and the temperature of your personal microwave. Mug cakes need a minute to rest once coming out of the microwave to solidify, so it may look a little gooey initially but give it a minute. Molten lava is more of a brownie consistency than a traditional baked cake. You can also cook it up to 30 seconds more if you prefer a little more cooked.
This batter is a brownie type batter and the extra chocolate bars will MELT into the mug and produce melted chocolate under the batter. Do not mistake that for raw batter (melted chocolate) and overcook your batter.
