Why you will love making Chocolate Lava Mug Cake
This molten lava mug cake takes longer to prep than “bake” but can be done in minutes. Minutes, I tell you! If you have never tried a mug cake, you are not alone.
Most people default to traditional dump cakes or real cakes and fail to take advantage of a decadent dessert in minutes.
These microwave mug recipes can be seen all over tiktok, and as an avid user there (find us here on TrishaAndCharlotte), I have been testing out some of the most popular viral recipes to see if they work. Original inspiration: BakingEnvy on TikTok!
The good news about this viral recipe – a 1-minute Molten Lava microwave mug cake DOES work, although read a few of my recipe notes to ensure you get it right the first time.

How to make Lava Mug Cake in the microwave
Choose a mug or microwave-safe container with enough room for the cake to rise without spilling.
Prepare the hot water. To start, you’ll need boiling water. Heat a cup of water in a saucepan or microwave some until hot. This will help melt the butter and dissolve the sugar. Keep this ready as your first step.
Mix Wet Ingredients: In a microwave-safe mug, blend the room-temperature butter, white sugar, and only two tablespoons of hot water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
Add the dry components:
- To your mug, add two tablespoons cocoa powder and 1/4 cup self-rising flour (not regular flour unless you are making it self-rising; see below).
- Stir the mixture until a cocoa batter forms, about 1 minute.
- Make sure you scrape the sides of the mug so there isn’t excess powder.
The Chocolate Center: Break 2-4 mini bars of your chocolate and drop them into the batter. Traditionally, in a molten lava cake, this is dark chocolate.
You can also buy semi-sweet white chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, or regular milk chocolate. Place in a mug and stir, so the batter covers the chocolate.
Microwave Magic: Place your mug in the microwave and heat on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Remember that how fast your mug cake cooks will depend on a few things: your mug’s size and your microwave’s wattage.
Mug cakes need a minute to rest once they come out of the microwave to solidify, so they may look a little gooey initially, but give them a minute.
You can cook it for up to 30 seconds more if you prefer a cake-like batter.
Serve and enjoy. Once done, you’ll have a delicious chocolate mug cake with a gooey center reminiscent of brownie batter. Pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an even more indulgent treat.
Baking note: This batter is a brownie-type batter, and the extra pieces of chocolate will melt into the mug and produce melted chocolate under the batter.
Do not mistake the molten center for raw cake batter (melted chocolate chunks).
Making Homemade Self-Rising Flour
I always keep self-rising flour in the house in addition to regular flour. Self-rising flour is simply a combination of flour, baking powder, and salt.
Creating that in only a few tablespoons is almost impossible, but it’s easy to make in larger quantities. Just use what you need and set aside the rest for later.
- To translate regular flour to self-rising flour, combine 1 cup flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- Mix well with a whisk before portioning the molten chocolate cake mug recipe.
Ultimate Toppings for Your Microwave Cake
Here are some mouthwatering toppings that you can enjoy along with your gooey chocolate cake creation:
Cocoa Powder: Sprinkle a dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder over the molten lava cake to add a rich and slightly bitter contrast to the sweetness of the cake.
Powdered Sugar: Lightly sift powdered sugar over the warm cake before serving. It also creates a beautiful contrast against the dark and luscious cake.
Whipped Cream: A dollop of homemade or store-bought whipped cream on top of moist chocolate cake is a classic choice.
Ice Cream: For extra indulgence, serve your molten lava cake with a scoop of ice cream. Vanilla ice cream is a popular choice, but feel free to experiment with different flavors like chocolate, caramel, or even mint chocolate chip.
