Acai Smoothie Bowl Recipe
Acai bowls have gained popularity in the past few years, with entire restaurants dedicated to the perfect acai smoothie bowl. Just keep in mind that acai isn’t naturally sweet and relies on toppings to balance out the earthy taste.
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
- Freeze your fruits: I made my own frozen bananas and strawberries by slicing and freezing them for a few days. This works great for a smooth blend. That being said, you can easily purchase frozen packs of berries and fruits as well.
- Acai pouches: Set the acai pouches out for a few minutes so they slide out of the package easier. You’ll need 2 packages per bowl, as stated on the package.
- Add to blender: Place the acai berry smoothie pouches, frozen banana, and frozen strawberries into a powerful blender. I use a Ninja Foodie Blender and it does a great job breaking down the ingredients.
- As a note, you can also add protein powder.
Step 2: Blend the Smoothie Bowl Base
- Pour in liquids: Add the coconut milk and honey. (You can substitute coconut milk with almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, or any other plant-based milk of your choice.)
- Blend: Process for 20–30 seconds until smooth and well combined.
Step 3: How to style the Acai Bowl
- Pour: Pour the blended mixture into a bowl, using a spatula to scrape down the sides (if necessary) and then smooth into a bowl.
- Top: Add toppings like fresh strawberries, fresh bananas, granola, and chia seeds. For a beautiful presentation, arrange the toppings in sections or create a pattern around the edge of the bowl.
- Enjoy immediately: Serve right away for the best texture and flavor.
Tips and DIY Variations
How to Make Acai Bowls with Frozen Acai: As shown in the recipe above, using frozen acai packs ensures you get a rich, smooth consistency. Pitaya Foods is a great brand to try.
Can you make acai bowls with acai powder? If you prefer acai powder, use 2 tablespoons of acai powder and increase the amount of frozen fruit to achieve the right smoothie texture. You can also use acai powder and get all of the added health benefits in overnight oats, to make ice cream, to add it to oat milk – or just to mix in other recipes like granola bars.
Different Toppings: Get creative with your acai bowl toppings! Try adding peanut butter, mixed nuts (sliced almonds, crushed pecans, or walnuts), coconut flakes, or any of your favorite fresh fruits.
Can I use other frozen fruits? Absolutely! Frozen mixed berries, mangoes, or blueberries are great alternatives or additions to your acai bowl. This is the benefit of making it at home!
Whether you’re looking for a vibrant breakfast or a healthy afternoon snack, this homemade acai bowl is so easy to prepare and a great way to fend off the munchies.
