If you’ve ever wondered how to make the original fantasy fudge quickly and easily, this microwave version will be your new favorite go-to recipe. Made with marshmallow creme, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and evaporated milk, this classic fudge is rich, creamy, and full of nostalgic flavor. It’s perfect for the holidays, especially if you’re looking for quick treats to add to your Best Christmas Fudge Recipes collection.
While many people search for this classic fantasy fudge recipe, I have to be honest—this isn’t my personal favorite version of fudge. It’s a quick option that works in a pinch or if you’re in the mood to try something new. Using the microwave can be inconsistent because of the temperature differences in each appliance.
If you’re looking for the most consistent and reliable results, especially during the holiday season, I highly recommend trying Best Fudge Recipe for Beginners instead. It’s a tried-and-true method that always delivers that perfect creamy texture!
All that said, its fun to try something new and the pieces of this fantasy fudge are still delicious and sweet.
Why You’ll Love This Fantasy Fudge Recipe:
- Microwave Magic: No stovetop needed! This fudge is made entirely in the microwave, making it an easy and quick dessert.
- Classic Flavor: Just like the original fantasy fudge recipe, but with a modern twist.
- Rich and Sweet: Be sure to cut into small pieces because the marshmallow addition in this fudge is decadently sweet!
Important Tips for Success:
- Use a Large Microwave-Safe Bowl: The mixture will bubble and boil to twice its size, so be sure to use a large bowl to avoid any messy spills. I used a 2.5-quart bowl, which worked perfectly.
- Microwave Wattage Matters: My microwave is 1,000 watts, and this recipe works best in microwaves between 900-1,050 watts. If yours differs, consider using a microwave conversion chart to adjust the timing.
- Adjust Thickness: For thicker pieces, use an 8×8 pan, but if you prefer thinner squares, opt for an 11×7 or even a 9×13 pan.
- Avoid Refrigerating Immediately: While you can refrigerate the fudge to speed up the setting, it’s best to bring it to room temperature before cutting. Chilling it too quickly can make it crumbly when sliced.
Ingredients (Makes 20-25 squares):
- 3/4 cup butter
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup evaporated milk (equivalent to a small can, or measure out from a larger can)
- 1 package (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 tub (7 oz) marshmallow cremecreme
How to Make Jet-Puffed Fantasy Fudge:
Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with foil and set aside.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, add the butter and heat on high for 1 minute. Stir until fully melted. Stir in the sugar and evaporated milk until well combined.
Microwave in Intervals
Please make sure to look at the tip on microwave wattage. Please be sure to see our note on size of bowl above under IMPORTANT TIPS.
- Microwave for 3 minutes, then stir.
- Microwave for another 2 minutes, then stir again.
- Microwave for an additional 3 minutes (the mixture will bubble and double in size), then stir.
- Finally, microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. The mixture will continue to boil and bubble.
Incorporate the Chocolate and Marshmallow Creme
Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave (it will be very hot!) and let it stand for 2 minutes. Stir in the chocolate chips until melted and smooth.
The mixture will thicken quickly to a frosting-like consistency. Add the marshmallow creme and mix until fully incorporated.
Pour the fudge into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Let it stand at room temperature until completely cool before removing the foil and cutting into squares.
Storage Tips:
- Store your fantasy fudge in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. We do not recommend putting in the fridge as this type of recipe crumbles if cold. If you’re making it ahead for holiday gifting, check out our guide on How to Pack Fudge for Gifts for tips on keeping it fresh.
- Can You Freeze Fudge? Absolutely! Wrap the fudge tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer-safe container. It’ll stay good for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
FAQ
Fantasy fudge is a classic American candy made with marshmallow creme, chocolate, and evaporated milk. It’s smooth, creamy, and a holiday favorite.
Crumbly fudge is often a result of overcooking or refrigerating it too quickly. Make sure to bring it to room temperature before cutting. Cold fudge made this way breaks down into pieces. Fantasy Fudge also is more conducive to crumbling than many other stovetop methods.
For best results, use marshmallow creme. Substituting with marshmallows may alter the texture and consistency and without testing specifics, there is no way to know if this would work. I do, however, always encourage creating your own recipes.
Absolutely! Chopped walnuts or pecans are a great addition to fantasy fudge. For other variations, you can add cookies like our Oreo Fudge.
