Strawberry Lemonade Shake Up

This post may contain affiliate links, please read our privacy policy for details.

This strawberry lemonade shake up is the same drink you find at food truck stands and fairs at open air markets, the ones served in tall plastic deli containers, shaken up, and sent off with a straw poked through the lid.

That shaking step is exactly where shake ups get their name. Real muddled lemon, strawberry syrup, and a good shake or stir come together for that same fresh, tangy, just sweet enough flavor, made right at home.

Homemade lemonade like this is so much better than anything from a mix. This one came together with real lemon flavor up front and a fruity strawberry finish that made it taste just like the ones from the market stands.

What You Need for This Shake Up

  • A large lemon, sliced into wedges, gets muddled to release the juice and oils for real lemon flavor.
  • Granulated sugar sweetens the lemon as it mashes together.
  • Strawberry syrup adds the fruity flavor and that signature pink color.
  • Water rounds out the lemonade base.
  • Ice for serving, plus fresh strawberries and extra lemon slices for garnish if desired.

Tips for the Best Food Truck Shake Up

No muddler? No problem. A tart shaper works just as well, and honestly, anything with a flat, sturdy end that can mash lemon wedges against the bottom of a glass or bowl will do the job.

This is exactly how a real shake up gets made. At the market stands, it’s mixed in a deli container, shaken hard, and served with a straw poked through the lid. At home, a good stir does the same job, whether you mix everything in a pitcher or a bowl first.

Making a bigger batch for a crowd? Mash the lemon and sugar together in a bowl, then pour that into a pitcher along with the syrup, water, and ice. Just make sure everything gets stirred or shaken together well before serving so the sugar fully dissolves.
