This recipe comes together with just a few pantry staples  –  cake mix, cream cheese, Cool Whip, and milk. A little green food coloring gives it that Christmas holiday color, and the heart sprinkles seal the deal with the whole Whoville vibe.

And of course, if you’re specifically searching for a green dessert dip, I also have a classic Grinch Dip made with canned cherry pie that readers always ask for around this time of year.

Ingredients for easy Christmas dip with yellow cake mix, cream cheese, whipped topping, milk, and sprinkles

How to Make Whoville Dip

Heat-treat the cake mix: Place the dry yellow cake mix into a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds to kill any bacteria, then let it cool completely before using. This keeps the dip safe to eat since the mix won’t be baked.

Make the base: Add cooled cake mix, softened cream cheese, and milk to a mixing bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.

Color it festive: Add a few drops of green food coloring and mix until you reach the shade you like. Gel food coloring gives you the most vibrant color.

Fold in the whipped topping: Using a spatula, gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until fluffy and evenly combined. Do not overmix.

Decorate and serve: Spoon the dip into a serving bowl, then sprinkle with Betty Crocker Hollyberry Decor sprinkles, red and green Jimmies, or top with a homemade red candy melt heart. Serve right away with pretzels, graham crackers, or Nilla wafers or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

How to Make Chocolate Red Candy Hearts

  1. Line a flat surface (like a cutting board or baking sheet) with wax paper.
  2. Place 5 red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat at 50% power for 15–20 seconds, stirring until smooth. If needed, microwave in additional 10-second intervals at 50% power until fully melted.
  3. Transfer melted candy into a resealable sandwich bag and snip off one corner. Pipe heart shapes onto the wax paper.
  4. Let stand at room temperature or refrigerate until fully hardened, then gently peel off and place on the dip.

Serving Ideas

This dip is always a hit on holiday trays and dessert boards. You can pair it with salty pretzels for contrast, or set it out alongside other sweet dips like M&M Reindeer Dip or Gingerbread Dip for variety.

Storage

Store leftover dip covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Note that any dip with cream cheese can re-firm in the fridge and it’s helpful to pull out about 15 minutes before serving to soften for easier dipping.
