Butterfinger Puppy Chow is a fun twist on classic puppy chow made with Rice Chex, peanut butter, chocolate, and crushed Butterfinger candy bars mixed right in. This no bake snack mix has the familiar muddy buddies texture but with extra crunch and that unmistakable Butterfinger flavor.

It is easy to make, great for parties, and perfect when you want a dessert mix that feels a little more special than the original. If you like puppy chow with candy bars, this version fits right in.

Easy no bake Butterfinger puppy chow recipe in a serving bowl

If you have made puppy chow before, this one will feel familiar but with a few small upgrades that make a big difference. I tested the cereal to candy ratio, how much powdered sugar actually coats everything, and the best way to add the Butterfingers so they do not disappear into the mix.

This is the kind of snack that works just as well poured into bowls as it does tucked into party cups, especially when you are building charcuterie cups for parties or holidays.

Ingredients

  • 7 cups Chex Mix (rice square cereal)
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 fun size Butterfinger bars
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Butterfinger Puppy Chow Recipe

Crush 15 of the fun size Butterfinger bars by placing them into a large resealable bag and using a rolling pin to break them into small pieces. Set aside.

Add the Chex Mix to a large mixing bowl and set aside.

In a saucepan over low heat, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Stir constantly until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently mix until all of the cereal is evenly coated.

Add the powdered sugar and mix well until the cereal is fully coated. Transfer the mixture to a large resealable bag, seal, and shake gently if needed to help distribute the powdered sugar evenly.

Add the crushed Butterfinger pieces and mix again until combined. Spread the puppy chow out on a flat surface lined with wax paper and allow it to cool and dry completely.

When ready to serve, coarsely crush the remaining Butterfinger bars using your hands and sprinkle them over the top for extra crunch. Serve immediately or store in a resealable container until ready to serve.

Makes about 8 cups.

Tips and Serving Notes

You will have plenty of cereal if you buy a 12.8 oz box of Rice Chex or rice squares, which is about 15 cups per box. I bought four packages of fun size Butterfinger bars, each 3.9 oz with six bars inside, which gave me enough for mixing into the puppy chow and topping it at the end.

I initially mixed the cereal, chocolate coating, and powdered sugar, then stored it in a zip top bag before adding the crushed candy, which made coating and storage easier.

This puppy chow works really well alongside other sweet and salty finger snacks.

If you are putting together a snack table, it pairs nicely with butter toffee pretzels or caramelized mini saltines for a mix of textures. It also fits perfectly into charcuterie cups for parties where guests want a little bit of everything. For a more casual setup, serving this next to garbage disposal pretzels gives you that sweet and salty balance people always come back for.
