There’s nothing quite like a decadent, creamy dessert dip that goes with everything—fruit, pretzels, you name it. My chocolate cream cheese dip is a must-have at parties.
It’s so easy to make and based on a few different recipe testing sessions that we did, you can also alter ingredients based on what is in your fridge or pantry to make it a bit sweeter or thicker (don’t worry, I give you my suggestions below).

Why You’ll Love This Recipe: • It’s ready in under 10 minutes—no baking needed! • Rich, creamy texture with a subtle cheesecake taste. • Works with fresh fruit, cookies, or pretzels. • A total crowd-pleaser for any gathering, from holidays to game days.
Ingredients:
- 1 brick (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 small tub (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed
How to Make Chocolate Cream Cheese Dip
In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe dish. Heat on 50% power for one minute, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth. Do not try to rush melting chocolate chips. Chocolate can easily seize, so low and slow matters here.
- As always, be careful when working with chocolate and the microwave as the bowl can get really hot.
Pour the melted chocolate into the cream cheese mixture. Beat on medium speed until fully incorporated and smooth.
Add the thawed whipped topping to the mixture.
Beat on low speed or fold in with a spatula until everything is evenly mixed and fluffy.
What to serve with chocolate cream cheese dip
Dessert dips are really forgiving when it comes to serve with them. Spoon the dip into a serving dish and serve immediately with your favorite dippers like salty pretzels, animal crackers, or sliced fresh fruit.
Alternatively, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. The dip can be made a day in advance.
Expert Tips and Variations:
- Microwave Melting Tip: Use a glass bowl for even heat distribution when melting the chocolate chips.
- Dipper Ideas: Use charcuterie cups so your guests can do a grab and go with the dippers Check out my charcuterie cup guide for inspiration on what to add and where to get our favorite cups.
- Flavor Variations: Add a pinch of sea salt for a sweet-and-salty twist or mix in dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate for a yin/yang of chocolate dip!
- Make it a Showstopper: Sprinkle mini chocolate chips or colorful sprinkles on top. This not only helps presentation when setting up for a party, but also looks a bit fancier to start for parties or holiday tables.
What makes this dip different from your other chocolate dip recipe?
It’s true that they both feature chocolate. The Creamy Melted Chocolate Dip focus is simply on the actual melty chocolate, more like a fondu texture that you would get a restaurant.

This dessert recipe is a fluffy version that features chocolate but also has other ingredients that make it less rich to enjoy.
Just a few commonly asked questions
Can I make this dip ahead of time?
Yes! Prepare the dip and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Because it is made with cream cheese and cream cheese hardens in the fridge, let it sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving to make easier to dip.
What if I don’t have whipped topping?
Substitute with marshmallow fluff (marshmallow creme) for a thicker but just as tasty dip. One of our most asked about recipes is actually our 5 star marshmallow fruit dip recipe. You can basically make that with the addition of the chocolate.
This is is what we recommend, but please note I cannot find it for a good price on Amazon. This is just mainly for you to know what the jar looks like. CLICK HERE.
Can I use dark chocolate chips?
Absolutely! You can really use any type of chocolate chips as long as you follow proper melting protocol. Chocolate can seize so easily, so whether you are making a classic fudge recipe or homemade hot chocolate, always melt slowly!
