It is a great idea and lots of fun, but its not without a few challenges. Let’s dive into the testing of the step-by-step process and then you can alter and make your own!
Christmas Tree Glass Ingredients:
- Fresh rosemary – for the Christmas tree inside the glass
- Fresh pomegranate arils – to mimic festive red ornaments
- Water – to create the icy effect
- Dental floss – for suspending the rosemary tree
- Tape – to hold the floss in place
- Drinking glasses – preferably 13.5 oz or similar size
How to Make a Christmas Cocktail “Snow Globe”
Prepare Your Freezer Space:
Before starting, make sure you have enough room in your freezer to place the glasses on a level surface. This is crucial to ensure the water freezes evenly.
Create the Rosemary Tree:
Using kitchen shears, cut the fresh rosemary into small pieces that fit comfortably inside your glasses. You can use more than one piece if your rosemary is thin like ours and you want a larger Christmas tree vibe. Get creative here!
Tip: Aim for a size that won’t extend beyond the top of the glass once the water is added.
Tie the Floss:
Carefully tie an 8-12 inch piece of dental floss around the top of the rosemary. The floss will act as a support to hold the rosemary tree in place while it freezes.
Position the Rosemary in the Glass:
Place the rosemary sprig in the center of the glass, ensuring it touches the bottom. Gently affix the ends of the floss to the sides of the glass using tape.
Important: The floss doesn’t need to be super tight; just secure enough to hold the rosemary upright. Once its frozen, it can be hard to get off if its too tight. If that happens to you, use a toothpick to loosen.
Add Water and Pomegranate Arils:
Slowly pour water into the glass until it covers the bottom of the rosemary tree. Sprinkle a few pomegranate arils into the water to add a pop of color.
Freeze Overnight:
Place the glasses in the freezer and let them freeze overnight. This allows the water to solidify completely, ensuring the rosemary stays in place.
When you’re ready to serve, remove the glasses from the freezer. Carefully untie the floss and remove the tape. If the ice has slightly fogged or sweated due to the temperature change, simply wipe it down with a cloth.
Pour in your preferred drink, whether it’s a non-alcoholic option like 7-Up or something more festive like champagne.
Tip: If using carbonated water or another bubbly drink, be cautious as the bubbles can cause the pomegranate seeds to float. If you tap them, they fall back down.
FAQs
How do I get clear ice in my snow globe cocktail?
The clarity of the ice can be affected by the water quality. Using purified water or boiling the water before freezing can help achieve a clearer ice.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely! These snow globe cocktails can be made a day or two ahead of your event. Just keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to serve.
What drinks work best for this snow globe effect?
Drinks like sparkling water, champagne, vodka, or even a light-colored soda like 7-Up work well because you can see the decorations.
How do I prevent the ice from breaking free at the bottom?
This is definitely going to happen at a point. As the glass warms up in your hands, the ice may will begin to break away from the bottom.
To minimize this, serve the drink immediately after removing the glass from the freezer and consider using thicker glasses and a thicker frozen base that retains the cold longer.
Fill Ideas for a Christmas Cocktail
Other than arils, you can try other items to freeze in the cocktail. While I haven’t tested all these out yet, here are some ideas if you want to get creative with your glasses.
As always, please exercise caution when adding items to glasses and they should only be given to adults to avoid choking hazards.
- Cranberries and Mint Leaves – For a classic red and green Christmas vibe.
- Frozen Raspberries – Adds a deep red hue and a fruity flavor.
- Slices of Star Fruit – Creates a starry effect, perfect for a Christmas theme.
- Edible Gold Flakes – Adds a touch of luxury to your cocktail.
- Candied Ginger – For a spicy twist that pairs well with winter cocktails.
