TikTok Cocoa Bombs

Nothing was more viral last year than the TikTok Cocoa Bomb. Chocolate shells encasing instant cocoa powder and mini marshmallows created their own industry with moms everywhere making and selling cocoa bombs in all social media.
Entire hot chocolate cocoa bomb companies were formed with cocoa bombs selling as high as $9.99 just to see that instant burst of cocoa and marshmallows melt in a hot cup of milk. Even more, cocoa bombs became somewhat of a sensation with tons of variations including alcohol filled, coffee filled and candy filled and inspired spin offs like tea bombs and smash hearts.
Interestingly, our full time food blog Salty Side Dish was the very first blog to publish a copycat hot chocolate cocoa bomb recipe after we saw them at Target and they were out- like way back in 2019. It was months, and I mean MONTHS later, when they turned into an internet sensation and everyone started making them as a trend.
Talk about being on top of a social media storm!
Even though we already have these viral hot chocolate bombs published on our main site, we still wanted to share them here for those specifically looking for Viral Recipes.

What kind of Chocolate for Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Chocolate can be super tough to work with. Heating up chocolate in the microwave is where it all goes a bit haywire so its important to find chocolate melts or chocolate bars that work well for you. Personally, I find that Wilton melts are horrific for my own chocolate projects and typically clump. Not everyone has that experience but as it has been mine, I want to point it out. I have always had really good luck with Chocomaker melting chocolate (Walmart) but I have been told by *some” readers they do not prefer the taste. Ghirardelli works pretty well on melts and the Bakers Dipping chocolate has always been good and melts well. The key is to be SLOW in the melt – heat, stir, heat, stir.
Where to buy Hot Chocolate Bombs?
If you prefer NOT to make your own hot chocolate bombs, they are for sale all over the internet. I like to support local, so check Facebook marketplace. As stated initially, these were started from a TARGET brand.
How much hot chocolate mix per bomb?
How much mix you can add into a hot chocolate shell depends on the size mold you are using. Typically you want to fill 2 tablespoons into the mold for a cup of cocoa. Alternatively, you could skip adding any cocoa powder and simply make MARSHMALLOW BOMBS and add those to the cup of cocoa.

Before you get started on making TikTok hot chocolate bombs, you will need to make sure you have semi circle molds. These are molds (that come in a variety of sizes) that contain 2 half circles that can be filled and mended together.
The most commonly purchased silicon mold for hot chocolate bombs are a size variety mold pack, which gives you choices no matter the size of mug the “bomb” is dropped into. That way if you are going to make a normal bomb, you have that size but having a variety of silicon packs also helps you make cool bombs like Mickey Mouse ears that need more sizing options from more than one mold.
If you want to look on amazon, look up “semi circle” molds or “semi-sphere” molds for most results.
Chocolate Cocoa Bomb Ideas for Sale
While the original TikTok chocolate bombs are seriously fun to make, they really are only meant for cocoa powder + marshmallows. There are so many other ways to make these super fun and if you are selling them, to stand out from the crowd.
Outer Chocolate Shells – Mainly you will need to use melting chocolate, but melting chocolates come in a variety of colors and flavors. Mix up the chocolate by skipping normal milk chocolate melts and try colors like white, red, pink, blue and green! This makes the chocolate bombs simple to customize for weddings, birthdays, holidays and parties.
Inside Chocolate Balls – Traditionally mini marshmallows and dried marshmallows go best iwth cocoa, but try adding COLORED marshmallows. Typically most stores have shaped marshmallows as well so add heart shaped marshmallows. Last but not least, purchase cereal marshmallows for some colorful fun (like the ones in lucky charms).
Holidays – Holiday colors are pretty easy to decipher, but think outside the box by making snowman chocolate balls (with mini carrot noses and even chocolate hands), Pokémon style where there are red and chocolate halves, green with gold for St. Patrick’s day, pink with pink marshmallow hearts, the possibilities are endless. Seasonal fun is the best fun!
Flavors: Try adding cookie crumbs, sprinkles, powdered sugar, chocolate drizzle, chocolate candies, and even bits of chocolate bars to really get the bomb exciting!
- Smores
- M&M
- Peppermint
- Cookies & Cream
- Mint
- Strawberries and Cream
- Oreo
How much to sell TikTok Hot chocolate bombs for?
Depending on the size of the mold and products use, plus flavor and of course seasonality, custom hot chocolate bombs can be sold from $3.50 to $9.99 successfully.
The large ones on average go for $6-6.50 and the smalls $3.50-$4 in most markets (Etsy, Ebay, Facebook, Amazon).
Storage of TikTok Cocoa Bombs
As you can see in our photos, we have stored our hot chocolate bombs in the freezer. Therefore when we take them out, they “sweat” as they hit the heat of outside where we photographed them.
The thing about chocolate is that its delicate and subject to the heat in your home, the kitchen and the environment in general.
Most times we make a ton of these tiktok goodies and then store them for usage later.
Our tips are to place each chocolate bomb in a CUPCAKE LINER so they do not touch one another or get sticky. Place each one in a sealable container with a lid OR a box like this for delivery to a neighbor or friend.
How to use a TikTok Chocolate Bomb
Its pretty obvious that chocolate bombs go into a hot beverage, but sometimes they do not pop right away and you want the goodies! Using the back end of a spoon, slowly push into hot milk, hot coffee or hot beverage of choice and hold under water just a few seconds.
You will see bubbles start to form and then pull away.
Then you can watch the chocolate bomb pop open and the insides come out.
Stir gently to form with milk and enjoy.
TikTok Hot Chocolate Bombs
Equipment
- silicone molds
Ingredients
- Melting Chocolate
- Instant Cocoa Powder do not use baking cocoa powder
- Mini Marshmallows colored or dehydrated
Instructions
Best way to make Hot Chocolate Bombs
- Fill molds with melting chocolate, freeze the entire silicon mold. Once solid, remove from freezer and layer one more time with chocolate and freeze. This gives a double thick layer of chocolate so the shells are not too weak or brittle.
- Remove semi-circle halves carefully from molds and fill one side of chocolate sphere with marshmallows, instant cocoa powdered, colored marshmallows or whatever inner fillings you want! (see article for suggestions)
Sealing Chocolate Edges
- Heat a non-stick skillet on LOW for a few seconds.
- Option 1: Add one side of a chocolate semi-circle warm on the skillet for about 1-2 seconds to melt the edges and then press both sides of the chocolate semi-circles together to form a whole circle. Using a skillet or griddle is the smoothest way to get seamless edges but also require the most care not to burn yourself. Option 2: The other option to seal edges is to pipe a small amount of warm melting chocolate on edges an seal together. This works best if kids are involved in assembling. Simply decorate the seams later on to hide them with chocolate drizzle.
- Place hot chocolate bombs in freezer for an additional 5 minutes to completely freeze together. Proceed with decoration.
- Place in hot milk or hot cocoa and watch melt and "explode" marshmallows and powder.
