Our opinion is that while it IS good as is, we do think this would be so much better if the recipe used Italian Sausage. Bob Evans makes it in a roll, and it’s incredible. Swap that for the burger, and it will burst with flavor!

What kinds of pasta can I use instead of ziti? 

The best pasta to use with this recipe is short pasta that can hold the cheese and the sauce.  If you want to veer away from ziti and try something a bit different, I suggest using:

  • Penne rigate
  • Shells
  • Rigatoni
  • Mostaccioli
  • Elbows

Gluten-free pasta will work equally well in this dish.  Whatever pasta you choose, be sure to cook it al dente, as it will become mushy in the oven if it is overdone to start.

Can I add veggies to Baked Ziti With Ricotta? 

Of course!  Just like a classic lasagna, vegetables can be a great addition to Baked Ziti, making it healthier while also bulking it up.  My choices of vegetables would be a combination of:

  • Broccoli/Cauliflower
  • Zucchini/Summer squash
  • Bell pepper
  • Onion
  • Fresh Basil

Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt, toss, then roast the veggies (all but the basil) in the oven at 425 degrees for 30 minutes.  You can then toss the veggies with everything before baking, or layer them in. 

They will add some heft to your dish, so you can reduce the amount of pasta used, or just bake it all in a larger casserole dish.  If using fresh basil, tear and garnish your Baked Ziti after removing it from the oven. 

Veggies can easily be prepped in advance and kept in the fridge for up to 3 days before use.

I thought I could dump almost everything into the 9×13 pan and just mix it up, and I did. But it’s bursting! So it can be done but needs to be done carefully. Otherwise, use a BIG mixing bowl to mix it together, then spread it into the 9×13.

How do I freeze and thaw Baked Ziti?

Follow the recipe as normal, let cool, and cover, first with plastic wrap, then with aluminum foil.  Cheesy Baked Ziti With Ricotta will keep in the freezer for as long as two months. 

To rewarm, you can defrost overnight in the fridge and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes, or place the frozen dish in the oven but bake it for longer, about 50-60 minutes. 

Remember to remove the plastic wrap before re-baking, but leave in place the aluminum foil until the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Smothered in meat sauce, baked with a huge cheesy top layer and served along side the best side dishes ever, baked ziti will keep you full for days. Get the added benefit of baked ziti with ricotta tasting similar to lasagna without the serious work of layering – its all the trendy taste without the back breaking kitchen work. This social shared viral recipe can also be served to a crowd, making it a potluck and party favorite.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 lb. ziti pasta cooked and kept warm
  • 1 lb. ground beef cooked, can be substituted for Italian Sausage
  • 1/2 onion diced
  • 1 tbsp. minced garlic
  • 32 oz. ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. dried parsley
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground pepper
  • 24 oz. jar of tomato pasta sauce
  • 14.5 oz. alfredo sauce
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese shredded
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack Cheese shredded
  • chopped fresh basil for top

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cook and drain ziti pasta noodles and set aside, keeping warm.
  • Brown hamburger, onion and garlic in a skillet until beef is no longer pink. Drain grease and set aside. 
  • In a large bowl that can fit pasta (which you will be adding later), combine ricotta cheese, egg and seasoning. Mix well.
  • Stir in pasta sauce and alfredo sauce and mix until combined well.
  • Mix together cooked beef, cooked and drained ziti noodles and cheese sauce/pasta sauce mixture. Stir until noodles are covered in sauce and meat.
  • Spread ziti into 9×13 baking dish.
  • Sprinkle top of noodles with cheese and bake on 350 for 15-20 minutes or until hot in the center.  Sprinkle on a bit of chopped fresh basil.
  • BROIL: If you want a browned cheesy top, place under broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese is hot and bubbly. Please note that a broiler can move fast and monitoring is a must to avoid any burning.
  • Serve baked ziti immediately while hot and melty. Recipe serves 8-10 and is very filling.
