Smash Heart

The trendy and viral smash heart is a lot easier to DIY at home than you think it is. No need to try and find a TikTok smash heart locally when all that is needed is the right heart mold, a mallet, and some melting chocolate.

The best thing about a custom chocolate smash heart (which is way easier and less time-consuming than a smash cake) is that you can personalize the colors, inside, and with any decoration you want.

Why you should make a Breakable Heart

Talk about the perfect way to say I love you!

Really, the only limit to what you can make the Smash Heart is your imagination!

If you’re not familiar with the Smash Heart, the chocolatey sensation that’s sweeping the internet, then you are in for a treat!  This easy and stylish confection trend is so versatile that it’s always the perfect centerpiece.

So… what IS a Smash Heart?

I like to think of a Smash Heart as a geometric heart-shaped personal piñata.  What you put inside can be as varied as how you decorate it!  Fill it with other chocolates, candies, cookies, or even non-edible items like jewelry or pictures.

The smash heart got big on social media in the past year and has included many different shapes. Hearts are only the start! Smash desserts have also included holiday silicone molds in other shapes and even a big large cupcake muffin mold with goodies on the inside.

Of course, the molds can vary in difficulty on getting the chocolate out of it, so if you are beginning with “smash” chocolate, make sure to start with a chocolate heart mold.

Let the holiday or occasion inform your choice of filling.  The best thing about a Smash Heart is that it’s customizable on the outside AND on the inside!

How to make a Chocolate Breakable Heart

  1. Find a plate that fits your heart mold and set the mold on the plate.
  2. Place each color of candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and place all of the bowls into the microwave. Microwave on 50% power for 60 seconds. Stir each color. Repeat, stirring each color until melted.
  3. Add a dollop of color into the mold, spreading out and mixing up the colors. Use a knife to spread the colors together and mix them into each other. Use the back of a spoon to spread the candy melts onto the sides of the mold. Freeze for 10 minutes.
  4. Place remaining colors of candy melts into a small bowl and swirl with a knife.
  5. Dredge strawberries into the bowl and lay on a piece of wax paper. Immediately sprinkle with sprinkles. Let stand to harden.
  6. Melt milk chocolate in a microwave safe bowl by placing it into the microwave at 50% power for 60 seconds. Stir and repeat until completely melted.
  7. Spread second layer of chocolate into the heart smoothing it out with the back of the spoon and making sure it goes over the sides of the heart. Freeze for 10 minutes.
  8. Find two plates to fit the heart mold. One will be the serving plate. Set that aside. Place the mold with cavity facing down onto another plate and gently peel the chocolate from the mold.
  9. Place the chocolate heart, open side up onto the plate. Fill the heart with various candy.
  10. Place the serving plate, face down onto the open heart and pick up both plates, with the mold in the center, and flip over both plates, putting the heart right side up onto the serving plate and leaving the candy inside the heart.

What type of occasion can I use the Smash Heart?

Honestly, I’m such a fan of the Smash Heart, I think it is the perfect gift for any occasion: Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Graduation, Baby Shower, Engagement, and even Gender Reveal Parties.

I may love making smash hearts more than hot chocolate cocoa bombs!

Should I use one heart piece or two?

A Smash Heart can be constructed either one of two ways: half-hollow, meaning there is only one molded chocolate piece inverted over its contents, or doubled to make a fully-contained chocolate box.

It is much easier to create one semi-heart and fill than worrying about sealing the chocolate edges to a fully contained heart, so we recommend starting with one (tips in the recipe box on how to achieve the candies “inside” a half heart.

Put the smash heart inside a cake box and surround it with candy, chocolate-covered strawberries, confetti, even flowers!

Just remember to include the mallet!

Smash Heart Molds

Where can I find smash hearts molds?

You can find the silicone molds in many brick and mortar retailers, or online here:

So, now that you have your mold, you’re ready to get started on making a SMASH HEART!!

What type of chocolate is best to use?

If you want to make your smash heart colorful, it’s best to start with colored melts OR a white chocolate base.  If you choose to use white chocolate after the chocolate has been melted, add your color.

There are SOOO many color options here depending on the look you are going for, but the easiest is to use Wilton’s Candy Melts, which come in a wide variety of colors. Or, start with white melting chocolate and add oil-based food coloring.

NOTE:  It’s really important not to use water-based food coloring to color your white chocolate, as it will RUIN your batch!

Here are some options for oil-based food coloring:

You can find these types of food colorings at Walmart, JoAnn’s,  Michaels, and of course online on Amazon.com.

What’s the best method of melting the chocolate?

Double-Broiler: Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I always melt my chocolate the way my mom taught me, which is the double-pot method.  Heat water on the stove until it begins to simmer.

Place chocolate in a smaller pot or metal bowl and sit that over the simmering water.   Only the steam should come in contact with the top bowl (not the liquid water).  Stir until the chocolate is melted.

Microwave melting: You can also melt the chocolate in the microwave.  Use a low power, and check it every 30 seconds or so, stirring as it starts to melt. We recommend only doing half chocolate at a time so it’s easier to work with without burning or hardening prematurely.

Is it better to do 1 thick coating of chocolate or two thinner coats?

I like coating my silicone mold twice.  I find it’s easier for the chocolate to break when removing it from the mold if I’ve only done one layer.

Also, I like to build up the edges of the mold with chocolate so that there is a base in which to lay the finished inverted piece.

What do you fill a Smash Heart with?

Smash hearts can be filled with loose candy like skillets, M&Ms, Sixlets, and Sour Patch Kids. Additionally, it looks great filled with wrapped candies like Tootsie rolls or filled with sweet chocolate-dipped strawberries on the inside AND the outside.

We like to use leftover chocolate on full strawberries to make the entire presentation a lot more beautiful and use any leftover product without waste.

How to Smash a Smash Heart

Pick a mold with a wooden mallet or buy a pack of wooden mallets to deliver with the smash heart. If wrapping up as a gift, I recommend a dessert box with a window.

Simply add a heart to the box, decorate around it, and add the extra goodies, seal, and deliver. Make sure to double-check your silicone mold size and box to ensure plenty of room.
