What Is a Smash Heart?

Think of a chocolate smash heart as a geometric, heart-shaped piñata. Instead of candy spilling out when smashed, it can be filled with chocolates, candies, cookies, or even non-edible surprises like jewelry or photos.

Smash hearts became hugely popular on social media, inspiring countless variations. While hearts are the classic shape, you can also find molds for holiday themes or even large cupcake shapes. For beginners, it’s best to start with a basic heart mold to perfect your technique.

How to Make a Chocolate Breakable Heart

Prep the Mold: Set your heart mold on a plate for stability.

Melt Candy Melts: Place candy melts in microwave-safe bowls and heat on 50% power for 60 seconds. Stir and repeat until melted.

Layer the Chocolate: Pour melted candy into the mold, swirling colors if desired. Use the back of a spoon to spread chocolate evenly, ensuring it coats the sides. Freeze for 10 minutes.

Seal the Heart: Place a serving plate face-down over the filled heart, then carefully flip it over so the heart sits right side up on the plate.

Tips for Smash Heart Success

One Heart Piece or Two? A chocolate breakable heart can be made as a half-hollow piece (open bottom) or as a fully enclosed box. For simplicity, start with the half-hollow method. This eliminates the need to seal edges and ensures your goodies stay secure.

Thick or Thin Coating? Apply two thin coats of chocolate for a sturdier heart that’s easier to remove from the mold. Build up the edges to create a strong base.

Double-Boiler vs. Microwave:

  • Double-Boiler: Heat water in a pot, then place a bowl of chocolate over the steam. Stir until melted.
  • Microwave: Use 50% power, heating in 30-second intervals and stirring often to avoid burning.

Coloring Chocolate: For vibrant designs, use colored candy melts or white chocolate with oil-based food coloring. NOTE:  It’s really important not to use water-based food coloring to color your white chocolate, as it will RUIN your batch!

Here are some options for oil-based food coloring:

Smash Heart Filling Ideas

  • Loose candy: M&Ms, Skittles, Sixlets, or Sour Patch Kids
  • Wrapped candy: Tootsie Rolls, truffles
  • Chocolate-dipped strawberries
  • Non-edible surprises: jewelry, photos, or notes

Use any leftover chocolate to dip strawberries for an eye-catching presentation. Arrange them around the smash heart for added flair.
