Charcuterie boxes are perfect for travel, lunches, beach days, picnics, or even plane rides. They’re pre-portioned, portable, and a convenient way to enjoy a delicious snack anywhere.
These DIY snack boxes are usually filled with cheeses, cooked meats, and fresh fruits. I’ll show you exactly how I pack our individual boxes for our busy family on the go.
These charcuterie boxes are perfect for making healthy choices on the go—whether you’re at your child’s soccer game, an office party, or a teen’s birthday celebration. They’re not only fun to prepare but also much more cost-effective than buying pre-made options from the store!
Ingredients per Charcuterie Box:
This is how I packed each box, so depending on how many boxes you are preparing, you will need to multiply these ingredients.
- 1 hard-boiled egg (I like to buy the pre-peeled and boiled ones in a package)
- 5 hard salami rounds (pepperoni works great too)
- 1 mini cucumber, sliced
- 6–8 grape tomatoes
- 1 small bunch of green grapes
- 2 slices each of pepper jack, cheddar, and Swiss cheese
- 3 fresh strawberries
- 8–12 fresh blueberries
- 4-6 fresh blackberries
How to Make Charcuterie Boxes at Home.
Assemble the Mini Box:
- Fold thin salami pieces in half and then half again, tucking it around the hard-boiled egg in one corner of the box.
- Add the green grapes next to the salami and follow with the slices of cheese.
- Arrange the cucumber slices and grape tomatoes in another corner.
- Finally, tuck the strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries into any remaining spaces.
Pack and Serve:
Close the box and tie a fork and spoon on top with baker’s twine. You can also decorate it by adding a little sprig of rosemary if you want to get fancy.
Storage Tip for Boxes
Keep the boxes refrigerated until ready to serve. These boxes are best when prepared a day in advance but can last up to 2 days if stored properly.
What makes a charcuterie box interesting?
Making the perfect mini charcuterie box is really dependent on your personal likes and dislikes. Adding a variety of savory (deli meats and cheeses), sweet (fruits, raisins) and salty (pretzels, croutons, and crisps) work best, giving the person eating it a lot of textures and flavors.
Other great adds are nuts like pistachios, peanuts, or walnuts and wrapped pieces of chocolate like a wrapped Hershey kiss.
Using cookie cutters to shape cheese brings some cuteness and customization as well.
- Never add: Uncooked meats, items that have sauce or that have high moisture that may leak, or pre-cut fruits that can oxidize and turn brown like avocado or bananas.
Where to Buy Individual Charcuterie Box Containers.
I purchased disposable charcuterie boxes with lids on Amazon and they are fine/durable, but because they are made from paper, they are single-use.
I even put them in a cooler and took them to a softball game. I just want to be transparent and say that they won’t seal air tight like a reusable container.
They are good quality, but if they get banged around in a lunch box, they might pop open. Treat them the same as you would if you picked up a container from the store.
- If you want something that stays more sealed, read my article on how to make a Snackle Box.
