I think when people consider sweet potato side dishes, they automatically think of sweet potato casseroles that are smothered in delicious butter and melted marshmallows.
And that is a delicious side dish. But sweet potato side dishes can also be savory and do not take a holiday to enjoy. The key to making and baking diced sweet potatoes is prep and time.
As with almost all potatoes, they take some time to cook and this recipe is no exception. That being said, other than the time to cook this dish, it’s mostly super simple and the prep is on the back end, making it not complicated to make at all.

Sweet potato time in the oven varies and potatoes cook faster when cut up.
This sweet potato recipe that bakes cut up potatoes in the oven takes approximately 40 minutes to soften and bake potatoes in dish.

Difference in Sweet Potatoes and Yams
The biggest difference in a sweet potato and a yam is the texture and flavor. Sweet potatoes are exactly what they sound like – a sweet, delicious potato with an orange outside.
Yams, however, are brown on the outside and are a lot more starchy. Do not substitute yams for sweet potatoes in every recipe or you may be surprised on the taste difference.
Are Sweet Potatoes Healthy?
Sweet potatoes are not actually a potato! As far as being healthy or healthier compared to a regular potato, they are very similar in nutritional value, with a slight uptick for sweet potatoes in fiber count.
Remember this is really only compared raw veggie to raw veggie – once you start smothering your sweet potatoes in marshmallows, cinnamon, and brown sugar butter, things change quite quickly.
Your taste buds will thank you, but your waste line says only occasionally, haha.
