Call these sour patch grapes or call them jolly rancher grapes, this recipe for sweet, sour, and slightly crunchy grapes are a fun and sweet treat for teenagers and kids alike.
Adding a rainbow of color to an appetizer or snack table, gelatin powdered grapes in a variety of colors and flavors are a super simple process to turn ordinary grapes into vibrant, candy-like bites.
Brands Jell-O, Starburst, Skittles, Jolly Rancher, and even Sonic all have a variety of gelatin boxes available at the store. The colors and flavors are entirely up to you!
Ingredients:
- 1 box each, 3 oz each, gelatin in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue colors (I used strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, and berry blue)
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- Green grapes, stems removed, washed, and dried
How to make Sour Patch Grapes with Jell-O Powder
Prepare Your Gelatin: Place each color of gelatin into a separate small bowl and set aside. This step gets you ready for the colorful coating process.
- While you need to buy a full box of gelatin, you wont use the entire box on this recipe. Just put a bit in a bowl and then dredge. There is no sense in dumping the entire box as you will end up having to throw it out. Just refill as needed till amount of grapes you are making are gone.
Mix the Juices: In a small bowl, combine the lime and lemon juice. This mixture will help the gelatin stick to the grapes, giving them that tangy sour punch.
Coat the Grapes: Take a grape and dredge it in the lime and lemon juice mix, making sure it’s well-coated. Then, toss the grape in one of the gelatin bowls, covering it completely. I found that using my fingers was the easiest way to ensure the grapes got a nice, even coating.
Arrange and Repeat: Place the coated grapes in a single layer on a plate or baking sheet.
Repeat the process with the remaining grapes, using different gelatin colors to get a rainbow of flavors.
Refrigerate: Once all the grapes are coated, pop them in the fridge for about an hour. This step is crucial because it helps the gelatin set, giving the grapes a slightly crunchy exterior.
Serve and Enjoy: After refrigeration, your Sour Patch Grapes are ready to serve! They’re best enjoyed chilled.
Can You Freeze Sour Patch Grapes? Yes, you can freeze this Sour Patch Grape Recipe ! After coating them, lay them out on a baking sheet and freeze. Once frozen, transfer them to a resealable bag and store in freezer until ready to eat. I have pretty sensitive teeth so I don’t personally freeze mine, but a lot of people love freezing grapes (with or without gelatin).
Do I have to use lime and lemon? You can use one or the other OR combine.
What is the Texture of the Grapes? Once refrigerated, the gelatin coating on the grapes hardens slightly, giving them a crunchy texture on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside.
Can I use sugar-free gelatin? You can. Just remember that anytime you change an ingredient in a recipe, it tastes different. Green grapes are plenty sweet on their own so I might even give some of the powdered drink mixes a try. If you do, let me know how it works!
RECIPE NOTE: While this grape recipe is often referred to online in social media as “candied grapes”, I would not personally call this a candied grape. If you are looking for that crunchy hardened sugar, try my flavored candied grape recipe here or my street vendor tanghulu grape recipe here instead.
