Nothing says summer like a fruit salad recipe. Loaded up with a selection of your favorite fruits, May-August is a great time to work in some new recipes. This beach season I have been all over the side dish fruit salad recipes and this Melon Ball Fruit Salad with a light lemon honey dressing is a great choice.
Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honey dew formed into little balls make not only a beautiful and shareable dish perfect for a summer bash, but a come-back-for-seconds recipe that can be replenished fairly quickly.
Melon Ball Salad Ingredients:
- 2 cups watermelon balls
- 2 cups cantaloupe balls
- 2 cups honeydew melon balls
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
- DO YOU NEED A MELON BALLER??? YES! This melon baller from amazon is so inexpensive and has two different sizes so you can get creative with all those fruit salads this summer! Check it out here.
How to use a Melon Baller:
The easiest fruit to use a melon baller with is watermelon. Press the baller straight in, open side down, and twist to form a round ball.
For cantaloupe and honeydew, its a harder fruit, you might get some flat edges, but that’s perfectly fine. On average, you can get about 20-30 balls from each melon, depending on their size.
How to make Melon Ball Fruit Salad
Prepare the Melon Balls: Using a melon baller, scoop out balls from watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. Aim for about 2 cups of each for a small salad. Don’t worry if some balls are not perfectly round; a little imperfection adds charm.
This salad can easily be made small or large depending on your needs. Just prep what you need.
Combine the Melons: Place all the melon balls in a large mixing bowl.
Add Flavor: Drizzle balls with honey and lemon juice. Sprinkle the chopped fresh mint over the top.
Mix Well: Gently stir the mixture to ensure the honey, lemon juice, and mint are evenly distributed.
Chill: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour. This allows the flavors of the dressing to mingle with the fruit and get the most flavor into the salad.
Serve: Give the salad a final stir before serving cold. Enjoy!
Tips for the Perfect Fruit Salad
Serve it up in a Melon Bowl:
No need to waste the fruit shells! Use one of the melon halves as a serving bowl. Simply scoop out all the melon balls and then use the hollowed-out shell to serve the salad.
Not only does the display look awesome, it uses the entire fruit and then you can toss it out when done (no dishes!).
Additional Fruits are fine to add:
While this recipe focuses on melons, you can easily add other fruits like strawberries, blueberries, or grapes. I think some of the fruits in the fresh berry fruit salad recipe or even some dragon fruit would be perfect.
Just mix in and up the dressing if needed.
Storing the Salad:
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The salad is best enjoyed within 2-3 days.
Please note that melons are naturally watery and you may have excess moisture at the bottom of the bowl the longer its stored. I highly suggest not over making this salad but just what you need so it can be served and enjoyed fresh.
