Spicy Dorito Taco Salad has a perfect spicy homemade dressing that pairs fantastically with all of your Mexican favorites – seasoned beef, jalapenos, shredded cheese, tomatoes, and cheesy flavored Doritos for a crunch.
This side salad recipe is a def must for your next party, potluck, BBQ or cook out!
There is a reason taco salads are one of the most commonly created side dish options for potlucks. They are easy to make, can be altered with so many different favorite ingredients and are just flat out delicious. Personally I love a Dorito’s taco salad and if you want to skip the homemade spicy dressing (although try it!), taco salads go super well with pre-made dressings like Cataline, French, Ranch and even Thousand Island.
Layer up seasoned ground beef or chicken, lots of traditional taco ingredients like lettuce, tomato and cheese as well as a lot of other alternative ingredients like beans, peppers and even corn!
I say bring on the heat with salsa, hot sauce, and our own formulated homemade spicy dressing. Want more kick? Instead of regular cheesy Doritos, try the extra spicy ones!

HOW MANY DOES THIS TACO SALAD SERVE?
Trying to figure how many servings in taco salad can be challenging. What exactly IS a serving when it comes to anything taco at all? An 11 oz. bag of Doritos is considered 1 oz. per person, serving 11 according to their bag. In theory, adding all the extra ingredients and the meat, this salad should serve around 15 people.
I think I would consider it a side salad for 10-12 in realistic proportions or 6 people as a meal. Also lets face it- if you are eating taco night anywhere, we all over indulge just a bit.
DORITOS OR FRITO’S?
For this spicy taco salad recipe, I used Doritos, but if you are only looking for crunch and not flavor, Frito’s also works as a valid substitution. Doritos also come in a variety of flavors like Cool Ranch or Sweet Chili and that also makes a great variation for a taco salad.
As a side note, individual chip bags make great self serving “walking tacos” with their own bag. No plate needed!
Other ingredients that are popular in a taco salad are are black beans, pinto beans, lettuce, tomato and cheese but some fun extras would be chopped avocado, chopped green onions, diced white onions and a bit of sour cream to round it out.
SPICY HOMEMADE DRESSING INGREDIENTS:
There are many ways to handle taco salad dressing. Personally, if you are rushed for time and like a sweet taco salad, I am a fan of just straight up adding CATALINA DRESSING. Its a family favorite. Only add it right before serving, stir well, and serve.
Or you an also make a spicy homemade dressing and this works well. Test it out in a bowl and see which version you prefer.
I suggest trying this spicy homemade dressing recipe as is before altering.
- vegetable oil
- hot taco seasoning
- Worcestershire sauce
