Boat Dip

TikTok’s boat dip, also known as taco dip, is an easy dip with an incredible burst of flavor.
Perfect for parties, football games, girls’ night, or at a BBQ, this dip combines Rotel and sour cream for a fiesta taco night any time!
Why you will love this Easy Taco Dip
Simple Ingredients: I love this appetizer recipe because you only need four ingredients for a WOW dip. Nothing to bake, this dump-and-go dip is easy to stir and serve. Change up the flavors by varying the basic dry taco seasoning or adding a bit of extra cayenne.
Great for on the Go: Aptly named, boat dip is excellent for on the go. Throw in the cooler for a beach day (or boat day) or whip up for the poolside. This dip can fit into a cooler and be on the go wherever you are this summer.
Where did Boat Dip come from?
As a food blogger for a considerable amount of time under my belt, this original recipe originated well before TikTok’s inception. Its been around as a crowd-pleasing side dish and potluck side dish for ages.
However, we were prompted to share it when it hit the FYP from creator @lnoden. She shares it while being ON a boat – which as a native Floridian, we approve.

Do we love this viral recipe?
We do! Sometimes the most delicious recipes are straightforward, and we all need to keep ease in our recipe arsenal for hot summer days.
Call it TikTok boat dip, taco dip, lake dip, or poolside dip; this dip will be your favorite recipe.
Ingredients
- container sour cream
- Rotel tomatoes
- dry taco seasoning mix – Any favorite dried taco seasoning mix will work great, but we are partial to Old El Paso dry mix.
- Shredded cheese – Sharp cheddar, mild cheddar cheese, or a fiesta cheese blend works best.
- Chips for dipping – Serve with your favorite Tortilla chips, TikTok Cheez-Its or Fritos (any corn chip works) for serving.
How to make Boat Dip
- Mix sour cream, tomatoes, a packet of taco seasoning, and cheese.
- Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Serve topped with additional shredded cheese if desired and dip with tortilla chips.
What to serve with Rotel Dip
Low Carb: To keep the carbs down, the base of sour cream goes well with any vegetable. Cucumber, celery sticks, and baby carrots are the most common. Another great way to serve is toothpicks and grape tomatoes or even air fryer onions to dip.
Carbs: Tortilla chips, potato chips, and Fritos are great options, and sure to leave the bowl empty.
Serve Immediately
Can this dip be served immediately?
Absolutely! Sour cream will already be cold, so the dip should be primarily cold and ready to go. However, as with most dip recipes, seasonings taste better when given some time to chill and mold together.
Variations
Sprinkle Ranch: Ranch seasoning goes amazing alongside taco seasoning and is one of my secret ingredients for a quality taco soup. Add a packet of ranch seasoning combined with the taco seasoning for more party flavor!
Dump the Rotel: Rotel comes in many different flavors, and some have heat! Try Rotel with Green Chilies to naturally add some spice to this dip.
Keep it Low Fat: I am a big fan of getting the full flavor from dips by using full-fat items like sour cream. But if you are on a nutritional diet and need to consume less sodium or fat, this dip can easily be changed into dairy-free sour cream or low-fat sour cream.
Add some Mayo: Substitute sour cream for half sour cream and half mayo. Mayo brings in a smoother and creamier taste overall.
Shredded Cheese: Cheddar is a natural favorite cheese, mainly when serving crowds, but any orange shredded cheese will go well with this dip.
Mix-Ins: You may need to play with the dip a bit to add more sour cream and seasoning; however, this dip can be versatile with added mix-ins. Try drained (and rinsed) black beans or drained corn to create a loaded taco dip recipe.
Protein: Cook, drain and add ground beef.
Toppings
Need some toppings? Try adding green onions, green peppers, green chilis, or sliced jalapenos.

Do you drain the rotel before adding it to the sour cream? I’ve seen instructions to drain, but several don’t mention draining.
No, I do not drain.
