Why you will love making Butter Boards

Trendy: Nothing is more fun than getting creative in the kitchen. Not all food has to be made for dinner, and this trendy and exciting butter board is simply fun for one or many.  Impressive, beautiful, and made with one of the most popular foods ever, butter boards are a TikTok Viral Food Trend we love.

Community food: When the Charcuterie board came out, there was a concern about sharing food and spreading germs. However, Community serving is comforting and warm, and there are many ways to keep it sanitary.

Personally, our family loves open plates and often shares large plates of nachos, cheese plates, and dips. We don’t worry too much about our own homes and family members.

If having a party, I have listed how to serve with mini butter knives and where to get them below.

Where did the charcuterie butter board start?

This butter trend was started by Joshua McFadden’s cookbookSix Seasons: A new way with vegetables.” It was made popular again by tiktok creator @justine_snacks, and you can see one of the more widely seen videos below!

The recipe we created was not the same as the viral trend in the video below – you can get super creative with this idea!

You need a Charcuterie Board!

Before starting this tiktok trend, you must have a wooden board or charcuterie board to display the butter on. Here are three that we highly recommend for holiday displays.

Charcuterie Board Set: This board set is done with nice straight lines and comes with mini knives to dive into the spread. We love how this one is set up in an entire kit with extra spaces for different types of slices of bread. SEE MORE HERE.

Bamboo Serving Platter: This large round serving tray makes a gorgeous display, perfect for Christmas. In the off-season, this tray is also great for a cheese platter. SEE MORE HERE.

Cheese Board Set: If having a dinner party, this large cheese board set also comes with individual serving trays to allow everyone to have their own set up that is personally theirs.

If you love the idea of a butter board but don’t want to share the same tray, this setup is for you. SEE MORE HERE.

You will also need a pastry set with piping tips if you want to get fancy with the butter display (and we suggest you do!).

Would we make this TikTok Trend again?

Absolutely! This trend is creative, fun, and has totally unlimited ideas and toppings. Plus, if someone tells you they don’t like butter, they are lying. Butter is life!

We created this particular butter board recipe and were inspired to get started by this trend.

Dipping versus Spreading

In theory, you would grab pieces of bread and dip them into the butter board. And this does work. However, you must be ready for a considerable amount of butter to appear on the bread.

In our tests, we found that it’s better to serve with mini butter knives and spread. This produces a nice thin layer where all the flavors pop and the butter itself isn’t overwhelming or too thick.

Here is a set of butter knives that would go great alongside the butter board trend to allow multiple people to eat at once.

Additionally, this keeps the butterboard more sanitary.

Flavor Variations

Variations are only limited by your imagination!

  • Toppings – Add flavored honey, chopped nuts, citrus zest, and dried fruit like cranberries.
  • Spices – like pumpkin and apple pie spice, or add heat with flaky salt and chili flakes.
  • Fresh Herbs – Simple salt and seasoning blends work great. Try Everything Bagel, rosemary, roasted Garlic or Lemon Pepper!
  • Edible Flowers – The original recipe uses edible dried flowers, like organic food-grade rose petals.

Serve board with Fresh Bread

Slice or pull crusty bread into large chunks –

  • Dark Grain Bread
  • Honey Bread
  • Oat Bread
  • Sourdough
  • Wheat Bread
  • Multigrain
  • French Bread

Won’t the butter get warm?

Salted butter is safe at room temperature in a butter tin (or butter bell) on the counter, and once you try spreading room-temperature butter, your toast will never be the same again. It’s SO easy! It won’t scrape and break the bread.

We use a butter dish at home to keep butter soft and smear bread.
