If you’re looking for a refreshing and fun adult appetizer perfect for a beach or poolside gathering, look no further than my Watermelon Mojito Skewers.
This treat combines the sweet juiciness of watermelon, the tartness of cherries, and the coolness of honeydew melon balls, all soaked in white rum. It’s the ideal alcoholic appetizer to bring a festive vibe to any event. Plus, they are super easy to make!
Ingredients:
- Cherries with Stems
- Watermelon – cut into bite-sized cubes
- Honeydew melon – can be cut into cubes, but I prefer using a melon baller to make them into balls because it’s more aesthetic.
- 1 cup white rum
- 1 cup lemon-lime soda
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup lime juice
- fresh mint leaves
Making Ahead Tips:
- Preparation: You can prepare the fruit and soak up to 24 hours in advance. Assemble the skewers shortly before serving to maintain the best texture and presentation.
- Serving Size: Plan the quantity based on the number of guests to avoid leftovers, as the quality of the fruit diminishes after a few days.
How to make Watermelon Mojito Skewers
Prepare the Fruit: Arrange the watermelon cubes, fresh cherries, and honeydew melon balls in a single layer in large containers. Tupperware works great for this because they have lids.
Mix the Mojito: In a separate bowl, combine the white rum, lemon-lime soda, granulated sugar, and lime juice. Mix well until the sugar is fully dissolved. Pour this mixture over the fruit, ensuring it’s all covered. Sprinkle the chopped mint leaves on top.
Chill and Soak: Cover the dish and refrigerate it for at least 2-3 hours, or even overnight if you have the time. The longer the fruit soaks, the more flavorful it becomes.
Assemble the Skewers:
When you’re ready to serve, thread the fruit onto skewers.
- A little tip for the cherries: Thread them in front of the pit rather than through the center to avoid hitting the pit. Make sure your guests are aware there are pits in the cherries. If you remove the pits prior, it often leaves a hole too big to stick through skewers.
Additional Fruits for Alcohol-Soaked Skewers:
Feel free to mix and match these fruits to create your unique skewer combination. You can even turn this recipe into a fruit salad by chopping the fruit into smaller pieces and serving it in a large bowl.
- Strawberries
- Pineapple
- Mango
- Grapes
- Peaches
Another great alcoholic soaked fruit recipe is my Boozy Cherries soaked in vodka. While it was written specifically as a Christmas party appetizer, it’s easily converted to any occasion.

Storage and Shelf Life of Alcohol-Soaked Fruit
Watermelon Mojito Skewers, like any fresh fruit, have a limited shelf life. Here are some key points to keep in mind for storage and safety:
How Long They Last:
- Refrigeration: Once prepared, these skewers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. However, they are best enjoyed within 24 hours.
- Texture Changes: Due to the alcohol and sugar content, the fruit may begin to soften and lose its texture over time. After 3 days, they may become too mushy to enjoy.
Important Considerations:
- Serving Suggestions: For the best experience, serve the skewers chilled.
- Alcohol Strength: Be aware of the potency. Because the alcohol is not cooked off, the fruit will retain its alcoholic content. Consume responsibly, especially if serving at a party where guests might not be aware of the alcohol content.
- Transporting: If you need to transport the skewers, keep them in a cooler with ice packs.
